Amor mi fa cantar a la francesca.
Perché questo m'aven non olso dire,
ché quella donna che me fa languire
temo che non verebe a la mia tresca.
A lei sum fermo celar el mio core
e consumarmi inanzi per so
amore,
ch'almen morò per cosa gentilesca.
Donne, di vero dir ve posso tanto,
che questa donna, per cui piango e canto,
è, come rosa in spin, morbida e fresca
Translation
Love makes me sing in France's style.
Why that occurs to me I dare not say,
for I fear that the one who makes me languish
would not understand my courtship.
I am resolved to hide my heart from her
and rather to
consume myself for her love,
so that at least I die for a noble thing.
In truth, o women, I can tell you as much,
that this woman for whom I weep and sing
