L'invido per lo ben che in altrui vede
si smagra e struge con pesce nel rede.
Seguita questo, n'el mai l'abandona;
ignoranz' ha di trar a chi s'apresta;
e quello, che nol sa, non li consona,
non li consente mai, tanto 'l
molesta:
onde nessuna è più grave tempesta
dell'invido, et Orazio ne concede
Translation
When the envious man sees another man's wealth
he pines and wastes away like a fish in the net.
He follows the other man, never lets go of him;
and madly sticks to whomever comes near.
The other one, who does not know,
is out of sympathy
and can't agree with the man who pesters him.
Therefore there is no greater disaster
