Strinze la man ogn'uon con fa chi salta.
Questo procede sol per avarizia,
ch'abbraccia gli uomin per aver divizia,
per la qual molti càder ne la malta.
La mano aperta dà la mente larga
che è de la vita
isbergo e targa,
né teme che Medusa quello assalta
Translation
Everyone clasps hands as if about to jump.
That's due only to greed,
which seizes men wanting to possess wealth,
for which many fell into the mire.
An open mind, which is the protection
and shield of one's life,
proffers an open hand,
and does not fear the assaults of Medusa.
