Tra speranza e fortuna i' pur m'agiro
e rimedio non trova al mie martiro.
E quanto più mi sforzo, più m'aretra
da sé quel volto che mi prese a l'esca
di due begli ochi più duri che petra,
per che in vano la
mie lenza pesca.
Ma io non finirò però la tresca
d'amor seguire pel viso ch'io miro

I swing between hope and chance
but cannot find a remedy to my torment.
The more I try, the further I am repulsed
by her, whose face caught me on the hook
baited with two bright eyes, harder than stone.
In vain I
cast my line.
I will not stop, however, from pursuing
