La mala lingua è d'ogni mal radice,
ben che 'l mal torni spesso a chi mal dice.
Però è ben ciascun chiuder la bocca,
cercando prima i suoi che gli altru' danni:
ché chi biasma in altrui quel ch'a lui
tocca,
conven che per se stesso si condanni.
E tal sotto color di bene a inganni
parla, che più tacer sarie felice
