Fatto m'ha sdegno partir via d'amore
sì che di servo son fatto signore.
Chi porta fed'altru' oltre misura
ragion nol move e senno nol conduce,
ch'i' fui servo con la mente pura.
Tra mie pensier tu fosti spechio e
luce:
or ho di sdegno scudo che riluce,
sì che invan tira chi saetta al core
Translation
Indignation has made me leave my love.
I was her servant, I am now my own master.
Whoever is loyal to another beyond measure
is neither moved by reason nor led by wisdom,
and the same goes for servants with naive
minds.
You were a mirror and a light to my thoughts:
now I have a shining shield of indignation.
